What does £10K a month in fractional CMO leadership actually get you?

It's the first question almost everyone asks. Fair enough, it's a meaningful number and you should know exactly what you're getting for it.
So let me be straightforward about it.
£10K a month typically buys you two to two and a half days a week of genuine senior marketing leadership. Not a consultant who turns up, runs a workshop, and sends you a strategy deck you'll never fully implement. Not an agency account manager who's junior to the person who pitched you. Someone who owns the outcomes, makes decisions, manages your team and agencies, and is accountable for results.
In practice that means your marketing strategy is set and connected to your commercial goals. Your team has clear direction and someone to escalate to. Your agencies have a senior point of contact who understands both sides of the brief and won't let them coast. Your tech stack gets audited, simplified, and actually integrated. Your reporting tells you what's working rather than what looks good. And your CEO stops getting dragged into marketing decisions they shouldn't need to make.
The comparison that usually surprises people is this. A full-time CMO costs £150K to £250K in salary, plus benefits, plus recruitment, plus the six to twelve months it takes to find the right person and get them up to speed. An agency retainer at this level of strategic input costs more, not less. And neither of them gives you the flexibility to scale up during a product launch and scale back when you're in execution mode.
The ROI case isn't complicated. In most engagements, the cost savings from rationalising the tech stack and restructuring agency contracts alone cover a significant portion of the fee within the first three months. The commercial value of getting the strategy right (i.e., stopping the spend that isn't working, doubling down on what is) is harder to put a precise number on but tends to be substantial.
What I'd say is this. If you're spending £30K or more a month on marketing and you can't clearly explain what it's returning, you're already losing more than the cost of fixing it. The question isn't whether you can afford senior marketing leadership. It's whether you can afford to keep operating without it.
